Celebrating the Legacy of Zins Hardware & Implement

Implement dealerships were crucial for agribusiness in Nicollet County. They supplied farmers with necessary machinery, equipment, and tools, enhancing their productivity. These dealerships also served as knowledge centers, where farmers exchanged information and learned about new technologies. Implement dealerships fostered community and played a vital role in shaping the local economy and society.

The Early Days

The journey of Zins Hardware & Implement began in 1892 when John C. Zins was born in Granby Township, Nicollet County, on July 20, 1867. At the age of 15, John started selling machinery on his father’s farm, laying the foundation for his future. In 1897, he opened a machinery and implement store on Nicollet’s main street, offering a wide range of equipment, including McCormick harvesting machinery, Waterloo Boy tractors, DeLaval cream separators, and milking machines.

John Deere Enters the Scene

In 1899, a significant turning point came for Zins Hardware & Implement when John Zins signed the first contract with Deere and Weber, the company that would later become the renowned John Deere Company. With this pivotal agreement, John C. Zins Hardware and Implement secured its place in agricultural history, holding the distinction of being the first dealership to sign with John Deere.

Continuing the Legacy

After John C. Zins’ passing in 1927, his two sons, Edward and George, took over the business. The period of World War II posed challenges for equipment dealers like Zins Hardware as farm machinery became scarce. To adapt and survive, the business diversified and began selling commercial feeds during the crisis.

Expanding Horizons

As better times returned, Zins Hardware & Implement flourished and looked to expand. In 1960, they constructed a 50 by 100-foot block building adjacent to their original location on Nicollet’s main street. The legacy continued to pass down through generations, with Paul A. Zins joining the business in 1967, followed by Paul M. Zins in 1979.

A Family Tradition

Paul M. Zins, representing the fourth generation, worked as a mechanic after completing training at South Central Technical College in Mankato. Over the years, the business expanded further, building a 60- by 120-foot warehouse in 1992 to accommodate the growing demand for lawn equipment.

Diversification and Celebration

As the agri-business landscape evolved, Zins Hardware & Implement embraced diversification, providing parts, repair work, leasing, and rental services. Throughout the years, the “hardware” aspect of the business remained a crucial part, serving as a supplement to the dealership’s clientele.

In 1999, Zins Hardware & Implement proudly celebrated its centennial anniversary with an open house, welcoming around 1,000 guests. The event featured displays of photos and memorabilia, including an Army escort wagon stored in John C. Zins’ original building. This historical artifact was assembled in honor of the anniversary, reflecting the rich history of the company.

Continuing the Legacy: Fourth Generation

In February 2004, the tradition continued as Paul M. Zins’ sons, Paul M. and Kurt, joined the family business, becoming the fourth generation to carry forward the legacy of Zins Hardware & Implement.

A Testament to the Past and the Future

As we celebrate the history of Zins Hardware & Implement, we also honor the spirit of entrepreneurship and dedication that have driven this family-owned agri-business for over a century.
