Students will explore the striking exhibits found within the Treaty Site History Center as well as the landmarks along the Traverse des Sioux historic site.
Tours bring learners of all ages back in time to 1800s Traverse des Sioux to better their understanding of the way of life for the Dakota and Euro-Americans.
Students learn Traverse des Sioux was a gateway and a gathering place for thousands of years, elements of Dakota culture, and aspects of prairie life. They will examine the many factors of the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, the debt it brought to the Dakota, and its consequences.
WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN?
The tour presents a valid learning experience outside the classroom.
Students will:
- Explain and analyze why settlers came to Minnesota.
- Understand why and how Native Americans negotiated treaties.
- Develop a chronological sequence of events for this historical era.
- Identify factors that drew people to their local communities.
SCHEDULING A FIELD TRIP
Educators can schedule tours of the Treaty Site History Center year-round Tuesday-Friday between 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Please allow 60-90 minutes for your entire visit.
Please submit your request form at least 3 weeks in advance of the earliest date requested.
COST
To qualify for a group discount, please contact us and book a tour in advance. Discounted group rates typically apply to groups of 10 or more people who book in advance.

- All teachers, bus drivers, and chaperones are free
- Free to Nicollet County school groups, including Gustavus Adolphus College
LOGISTICS
How many students can you accommodate for a guided field trip?
Guided field trips can accommodate up to 20 students per tour guide. Our guides are volunteers, so we cannot guarantee we can host more than 40 students per visit.
How many chaperones do we need?
We require one chaperone for every five K-6th graders and one chaperone for every ten 7-12th graders (teachers included). We ask chaperones to actively participate, remain with their students at all times, and enforce the Treaty Site History Center’s rules.
Is there a place to eat at your museum?
Currently, we do not offer a place to eat lunch, so plan your trip accordingly.
