SHADOWS AT THE CROSSING: SPIRITS OF OLD TRAVERSE DES SIOUX

A man standing in a prairie at night.

For thousands of years, the Dakota people thrived at Traverse des Sioux, a place steeped in history and tradition, nestled alongside the majestic Minnesota River. In the early 19th century, the arrival of European American fur traders, missionaries, and daring adventurers brought a wave of change and new encounters to this remarkable crossroads.

However, Traverse des Sioux’s most significant historical moment occurred in 1851 when the US government and the Dakota Nation came together to negotiate and sign the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux. This treaty had profound and lasting implications for the land and its people, shaping the destiny of Minnesota Territory.

Shadows at the Crossing: Spirits of Old Traverse des Sioux invites you to explore this rich history through a guided lantern-lit tour to meet five inhabitants who once called this place home, sharing their stories, experiences, and perspectives from this pivotal era.

As you journey through the night, you’ll hear tales of courage, resilience, conflict, and cooperation from the very voices that shaped the destiny of Traverse des Sioux and Minnesota. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about the past, this event promises an engaging and enlightening experience that will leave you with a deeper understanding of Minnesota’s heritage.
